    How to calculate work hours

hours = (end − start) for each shift, added up − unpaid break

A shift from 7:00 AM to 11:30 AM is 4 hours 30 minutes. A second shift from 12:15 PM to 4:45 PM adds another 4 hours 30 minutes, for 9 hours in total. The 45 minutes between the shifts isn't counted.

If a shift ends after midnight, enter the end time as normal. An end time earlier than the start time is treated as the next day.

    Common questions

How do I calculate hours worked between two times?

Subtract the start time from the end time. 8:15 AM to 5:00 PM is 8 hours 45 minutes, or 8.75 hours. If the end time is earlier than the start, the shift ran past midnight.

How do I add up several shifts in a day?

Work out each shift on its own and add them. 7:00–11:30 (4.5 h) plus 12:15–4:45 (4.5 h) is 9 hours. The gap between shifts isn't counted.

Should I subtract my lunch break?

Only if it's unpaid and you didn't clock out for it. If you clocked out and back in, enter it as two shifts instead and the gap is left out automatically.

How many hours is 9 to 5?

    9:00 AM to 5:00 PM is 8 hours. With a 30-minute unpaid lunch it's 7.5 hours, and with a 1-hour lunch it's 7 hours.

Can I calculate a whole week?

This page handles one day. Use the time card calculator for a full week with overtime, or the timesheet calculator for biweekly periods.
