Work out your overtime rate and pay. Enter your hourly rate and hours, or a weekly total and let the calculator split off the hours over 40.
Hours over 40 count as overtime (federal rule).
How to calculate time and a half
- Multiply your regular hourly rate by 1.5 to get your overtime rate.
- Multiply the overtime rate by your overtime hours.
- Add your regular pay (rate × regular hours) for your total gross pay.
Worked example: $18.50 an hour, 40 regular hours and 6 overtime hours.
| Overtime rate: $18.50 × 1.5 | $27.75 |
| Overtime pay: $27.75 × 6 | $166.50 |
| Regular pay: $18.50 × 40 | $740.00 |
| Total gross pay | $906.50 |

Common questions
How do I calculate time and a half?
Multiply your regular hourly rate by 1.5. At $20 an hour, time and a half is $30 an hour. Then multiply that rate by your overtime hours: 5 overtime hours at $30 is $150.
What is double time?
Double time is twice your regular rate. It's required in some states for long days, such as California after 12 hours in a workday, and some employers pay it for holidays.
When do I get time and a half?
Under the federal Fair Labor Standards Act, non-exempt employees get at least 1.5 times their regular rate for hours over 40 in a workweek. Some states also have daily overtime rules.
Is overtime calculated on gross or net pay?
On gross pay. Overtime is your regular hourly rate times 1.5, before taxes and deductions. Bonuses and some other pay can raise the regular rate used for overtime.
What is my effective hourly rate?
Your total pay divided by all hours worked. Overtime raises it above your base rate, which shows how much the extra hours added.
