How to convert time to decimal hours

decimal hours = hours + minutes ÷ 60

7 hours 45 minutes is 7 + 45 ÷ 60 = 7.75 hours. Going the other way, multiply the decimal part by 60: 8.20 hours is 8 hours and 12 minutes.

Common questions

How do I convert hours and minutes to decimal?

Divide the minutes by 60 and add the result to the hours. 7 hours 45 minutes is 7 + 45 ÷ 60 = 7.75 hours.

How do I convert decimal hours back to minutes?

Multiply the decimal part by 60. 8.2 hours is 8 hours and 0.2 × 60 = 12 minutes, so 8:12.

What is 15 minutes in decimal?

0.25 hours. 30 minutes is 0.50, 45 minutes is 0.75 and 20 minutes is 0.33 (rounded).

Why does payroll use decimal hours?

Pay is hourly rate times hours, and that only works with decimal hours. 7:30 is 7.5 hours, not 7.3, so writing 7.30 by mistake underpays by 12 minutes.

Can I convert a whole column of times?
